“Safety First” Mahjong Table Article was first featured on Singaplex which features witty stories from Singapore and beyond.
Mahjong is communal habit that is so ingrained into our local culture. We envisioned that perhaps, if people were to maintain the safe distancing measures, upkeep a heightened consciousness against spreading pathogens, the Mahjong table would have to look very different.
It all started with a lighthearted “Ho Seh Boh” to my buddy Calvin over on WhatsApp. The conversation quickly evolved into jokes about the stunts people may have to pull during the Covid-19 season because “cannot tahan already, must scratch itch”. We then mused that the absence of Mahjong sessions must create the craziest itch. As a heart-lander, I grew up with the sound of Mahjong echoing in our HDB estates and have fond memories of my ah -ma and her kakis playing Mahjong into the wee hours of the night.
Being product designers, it’s only natural that we wanted the outcome to be a physical solution. COVID-19 "Safety First" Mahjong table has dividers that can be taken apart, a casing that sits on to of the table , has holes for gloves slots for players to insert their hands to "wash" the tiles, a personal surface to place your drinks and perhaps the incorporation of UV light strips to kill germs/ viruses.
